About Downtown Asheboro Inc.

Downtown Asheboro Inc. (DAI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to creating a vibrant downtown district through preservation-based community revitalization. Our focus is to foster and stimulate economic growth and development downtown through four key pillars: Organization, Economic Vitality, Promotion, and Design, each playing a pivotal role in reshaping the landscape of Downtown Asheboro. We are an accredited member of the North Carolina Main Street Program and the National Main Street Center, a subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

This mission of Downtown Asheboro Inc. is accomplished through a dynamic public-private partnership, uniting downtown stakeholders, the City of Asheboro, and institutional partners who share a common vision of a thriving Asheboro. DAI is led by a full time Executive Director and receives guidance from a volunteer Board of Directors composed of downtown business owners, property holders, and civic leaders.

Our Vision:

In the heart of North Carolina, Asheboro proudly serves as the gateway to the world's largest natural habitat zoo, the North Carolina Zoo. Downtown is entrepreneurial, artistic, and innovative. This eclectic mix provides a welcoming atmosphere for all and encourages a growing and forward-thinking environment for small business and residential living.

As a Main Street America™ Accredited program, Downtown Asheboro Inc. is a recognized leading program among the national network of more than 1,200 neighborhoods and communities that share both a commitment to creating high-quality places and to building stronger communities through preservation-based economic development. All Main Street America™ Accredited programs meet a set of National Accreditation Standards of Performance as outlined by Main Street America.

Asheboro is a North Carolina Main Street community, designated by the N.C. Department of Commerce Main Street & Rural Planning Center.  Downtown Asheboro Inc. is charged with administering the program at the local level and building public-private partnerships to spur economic development that achieves measurable results such as investment, business growth, and job creation.

Main Street Program

We Are a Proud NC Main Street Designated Community

Our Impact:

As the NC Main Street program administrator for Asheboro, Downtown Asheboro Inc. (DAI) has continued our mission of creating a vibrant downtown by promoting economic development through historic preservation. Since our program inception in 2020, we have helped foster over $13 million in private investment in our downtown district, resulting in a net gain of 11 businesses, 29 full-time jobs, and 31 part-time jobs. In the 2022/2023 fiscal year, we welcomed 50 new residential units to our downtown footprint in the Church Street Lofts, saw 3 buildings completely renovated, and 5 facades improved. Our promotional efforts, including the Friday Night Rock’n the Park concert series, brought over 15,000 visitors to our downtown district from across the region. This impact wouldn’t be possible without the community stakeholders who have invested their time and efforts into the community, volunteering over 1,450 hours since 2020.

North Carolina Main Street Rural Planning Center
The NC Main Street & Rural Planning Center is North Carolina's state coordinating program for Main Street America. The NC Main Street staff are charged by the NC Department of Commerce to facilitate downtown economic development, using the Main Street America Four Point Approach, in designated communities. The Main Street Approach™ is centered around economic development strategies that will transform downtown. These strategies articulate a focused path to revitalizing or strengthening a downtown economy. Designated NC Main Street community's work is organized around the Four Point Approach: Economic Vitality, Design, Promotion, and Organization.

The selection process is competitive. The NC Main Street & Rural Planning Center's Downtown Associate Community is the first step towards the NC Main Street Designation. Communities are selected every other year via a competitive application process. North Carolina municipalities, with an identifiable traditional downtown business district and a certified population under 50,000 are eligible to apply to the Center for services under the Downtown Associate Community program. Selected communities will receive three years of downtown revitalization technical assistance services from the NC Main Street & Rural Planning Center and may have the opportunity to move up to Main Street designation upon successful completion of the program.
